Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a project delivery approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to optimize the project results, increase value to the owner, reduce waste and maximize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction. Integrated Projects are uniquely distinguished by highly effective collaboration among the owner, the prime designer, and the prime constructor, commencing at early design and continuing through to project handover.
IPD is built on collaboration, which in turn is built on trust. Effectively structured, trust based collaboration encourages parties to focus on project out comes rather than their individual goals.
The IPD team is bound together as team contractually. Chosen for the experience and abilities that they offer the team, all participants are clear on the role playing and accountability individually and as a whole.
IPD embraces the following principles: mutual respect and trust, mutual benefit and reward, collaborative innovation and decision making, early involvement of key participants, early goal definition, intensified planning, open communication, appropriate technology and organization with leadership.
This no blame culture provides the owner with the best of all worlds. Value engineering begins at day one my a motivated group, who’s mandate is to provide the design, engineering, planning, estimating and construction of the facility exceeding the owners requirements, meeting all of the defined scope of work and budgets.
IPD removes the adversarial mind set of most construction projects. IPD provides expertise, teamwork with accountability. IPD binds the team as one entity to the owner.
IPD was first developed by Toyota and was later adapted in the United States for construction practices. Today, progressive Canadian construction companies have learned the process and now offer this unique service to their client base.
